Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2017 (S. 1534). I am glad to have the benefit of your views on this issue.
On July 17, 2017, I introduced S. 1534 in the United States Senate. This legislation would direct the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to provide regulatory parity for amateur radio operators. The bill would ensure that our nation’s amateur radio operators can continue to provide critical communications support at no cost to taxpayers. This would be particularly beneficial in Mississippi and other rural states. During Hurricane Katrina, Mississippians learned firsthand the value of amateur radio and its ability to provide backup communications services that could help save lives in times of emergency.
The House passed the identical legislation on January 23, 2017. Currently, this bill is being considered by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.
Be assured I will keep your views in mind as this bill moves through the legislative process. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever be of assistance.
With best wishes, I am
Roger F. Wicker
